PRO/1/2/3 RACE REPORT

I guess we can say, Mother-Nature was at least somewhat merciful on this day. The sun was out!! AND, while watching the mercury climb from 30 to 31 to 32 to 33 to a balmy 34 degrees at race start time, at least the winds were at bay!!
Granted it was a small field for the P123 race, but it was a race nonetheless!!!!!!!!!!
This report from the saddle is quite one sided as I saw very little of the field today. I’ll keep it as correct as I possibly could with the limited vantage point I had all day long.
Its a very very rare occasion when you're able to land a breakaway like this one.....as we all know, it usually it ends up being a mix of different teams that are represented in a breakaway – which brings on a mix of tension and attitude. Today, Jason Walters & I just KILLED IT. It went on lap #2 and it was - just the 2 of us. I actually extended a personal invitation to the ProPedals guy Eric Wallenburg by asking him before the base of the hill the 2nd time around if he was ready to split things up and his answer was "not really". This guy rode super super strong 3 weeks ago when he soloed away from the field and ultimately became part of the winning breakaway move with me, Jason Walters, Erdelyi of Rite Aid and some other guy (I forget his name). Wallenburg took 5th that day and seeing his display of power was therefore a force to be reckoned with and to be strongly considered!!
Anway, part way into lap #2 I hit it hard at the base of the hill & there it was, only Jason Walters. Wallenburg, the ProPedals dude failed to respond @ the opportune moment and he was left dangling out in the wind. He actually looked as if he was going to make it up to us at one point up until we came to the hill another time around - that was it for him. J & I opened up a big gap on him & a huge one on the rest of the field. Thank you to Paulie Ziminski for blocking for us & riding a super race.
J and I put it down really hard, the 2 of us, and surprisingly did little to no talking during our long break away saga. We seemed content on punishing the field, our pedals, and mostly, ourselves. It made for some good hard core training mileage. Eventually we ended up coming around and lapping the field but before we did, J gave me the word to blow past them. But as we caught them, they latched on pretty hard and didn’t want to let go. Now, the ProPedals guy was a bit ahead of the main field so J & I wanted to reel him in & lap him too. Jason & I tested the field we just lapped but they responded strongly to our moves. A decisive move came when gutted it out & I threw it down with all I had…super hard from the base of the hill on our 1.3 mile loop. Man...Jason was riding really strong today and yeah, he put a hurtin' on me during our breakaway, but at the base of this hill, I hurt myself even more than I've been hurtin' all day long. Jason said it well after the race when he stated “you almost killed us both goin’ up the hill that time…” Anyway, it did the trick!! Coming over the hill I looked back to see the field shattered!!! Jason was several bike lengths behind me but clear of the field carnage – J had a painful look of fire in his eyes…close enough to catch back on to me and quickly enough to do it without bringing anyone else with him. And that’s just what he did…in grand style I may add.
So that was pretty much it. We were never able to lap the Wallenburg who soloed this entire race & soloed in for 3rd place. Congratulations out to him as he rode a very difficult race all by himself.
I'm really glad the photographer (Sullivan) caught a rare 1 - 2 punch photo. Walters & I both won!! It was decided that we wouldn't contest the finish line and that but that I should roll in ahead by a few inches as I was ahead in the point series for this Race. Thanks out to Jason Walters – a true gentleman and a scholar!
A great day from my perspective!!
