Jonathan Erdelyi Diary: Getting my act together.....hopefully
4/23/2004 By: Jonathan Erdelyi

These past few weeks since I have been home, I have been really trying to focus on my cycling. This past weekend it had all paid off for the first time this year. The time spent in Florida, the stay in California, and just some of those good old fashioned long rides during the winter (Sadly, there were not enough of those this winter) had all paid off.

I chose to head South to Baltimore for a little circuit race (Carl Dolan Memorial) held just outside of Baltimore in the town of Columbia. The course was set in Industrial Park. It was a little longer then 2 miles with a nice hill on the home stretch where they have decided to place the Start/Finish line.

In attendance was Snow Valley, lead by the infamous John Worsing. NCVC, Bike Doctor, and a few of the other local teams were there on the scorching 88 degree day. Feels a little hot when you are not adapted to it. Seeing as we went from 50’s to that hell of a day, two bottles were not even enough for a 40 mile race.

The race was full of attacks coming from Snow Valley and the Bike Doctor team. Nothing was able to get enough headway though because if one team had missed it, they would get to the front and bring it all right back together. With 3 laps to go, everyone knew that it was going to come down to a field sprint. Teams began to assemble and with 1 lap to go, Snow Valley got to the front and began to lead it out for their boy Cameron. They lead the entire last lap with no contesting to take over. While they were leading it out with the 6 guys they had left, I was sitting just a few wheels back jockeying for position.

Coming through the only right hand turn on the course, guys began to come upside so I decided to move up and hop right on the back of the train. Starting up the hill, riders from Snow Valley begin to jump to get it up to speed. With about 200 meters to go, I go on the inside of Cameron to the left and luckily could hold it long enough to make it across the line first. I guess that those 5 hill intervals the other day paid off when I needed them too.

Enough about the race. I hope that I can finally find my way this year and get it all together when it comes time. These up coming weeks are going to be fun filled. Everything from The Heritage Tour down in South Carolina to the Turkey Hill Road Race in Lancaster. Some of my main goals for this year are to be ready and fully prepared for the Trenton race and the USPRO championships. Which are then followed by the trials in California. It is taking a lot of time to prep and even think about doing anything of that level. Training for me right now is harder then ever and my race selections are even harder. Have to try to be prepared, only way to do this is to do races that are suited for me plus would make me more suited for the upcoming races.

I am done rambling on. Hope that everyone stays healthy and is training hard. Enjoy my article and if you have questions or we all know how I love the comments, feel free to write me. Thanks to everyone who supports me, you know who you are...
