Team Sustainable Cycling: Wrapping Up 2009, Gearing Up for 2010!
What a year! Team Sustainable Cycling proved its place in the Midwest racing scene this past season, but more importantly, its environmental message was a success. With 11 wins across the Midwest in the first year, the team’s success at races alone speaks for itself. The team continued to uphold its aggressive racing style helping to animate almost every race we attended while having a blast racing together throughout the 2009 season.
However, Sustainable Cycling’s mission was not simply to achieve a successful racing season. They had a much larger goal of promoting environmental awareness. Throughout the year the team tracked all of its miles traveled by car (or plane) for racing and training totaling 13,268 miles (or roughly 13,500 tons of CO2). The team plans to purchase the appropriate number of Carbon Offsets from carbon offset provider Native Energy (www.nativeenergy.com) to offset this travel. The offsets will go to help fund environmentally sustainable and renewable energy sources (i.e. wind farms, methane sequestration, etc…). Doing their part to offset this travel was only one component of the team’s green mission.
Team Sustainable Cycling, based out of Columbus, IN, partnered with the local community by creating a ‘Tips for Green Living’ guide which distributed at the local Sustainable Living Fair in September. Most recently the team volunteered at the local Recycling Center during America Recycles Day. “It was great to lend a helping hand and support a cause that this team was built around,” stated team manager Spencer Dell.
As they look forward to 2010, the excitement is already brewing! New roster and sponsor announcements will be happening as well as new goals for their environmental mission.
