An Epic Race

Canada's Svein Tuft of Team Symmetrics won the inaugural U.S. Open Cycling Championships in an epic race that included 18-degree temperatures, snow, strong winds, cobblestones, and a fierce, international field.

The start of the race in historic Williamsburg was delayed by one-hour and twenty minutes while race officials, police, motorcycle escorts, television helicopter pilots and team managers anxiously monitored sufficiently clearing weather conditions hoping to allow safe, or at least somewhat safe, racing conditions.

U. S. Open Cycling Championships Competition Director Ravi Rajcoomar gave the order to start the race at 9:30 am and the 150-man field raced away from Williamsburg, past Jamestown and the James River Plantations towards Richmond with its eight, 5.5 mile finishing circuits.

The field, comprised of teams from the USA, Canada and Mexico, raced towards Richmond at 30 mph-plus speeds, fighting crosswinds and snow showers. Once in the capital of Virginia, the race exploded into pieces on the circuits that included what is now the famous cobblestoned climb up Libby Hill. Evoking images and action of century-old European races such as the Tour of Flanders, the Richmond circuit blew the field into pieces.

Colombia's Gregorio Landino Vega, racing for Mexico's Tecos Team, launched a solo move at mile 82 that held off the field for over 10-miles. Caught at mile-92, a flurry of counter attacks insued, but nothing stuck until Team Slipstream's European veteran Pat McCarty, with 20-miles to the finish, escaped the field in his own solo attempt. McCarty forged a 23-second lead over the field, but started to lose ground, dropping to a fifteen second lead after four-miles of effort. Tuft then bridged up to McCarty, the two combined forces, and their lead began to grow, as the big teams (Navigators, Toyota and Healthnet) neutralized one another behind.

The field splintered from behind with three laps, (16-miles) under pressure from attacks and counter attacks. Tuft and McCarty, working with notable smoothness together, never faltered under the pressure, and their lead one-minute lead remained stable until one-half lap to go, when an acceleration of the chasing group began to eat into it.

On the last climb of Libby Hill, Tuft, using a giant gear, simply powered away from McCarty, punched around the Monument to the Solider and Sailors, and began to take time out of everyone, including the chasing field.

Tuft won with :41 over McCarty, who, by inches, as the chasing field blew past him just two inches too late, held on to second place over Argentina's Alejandro Borrajo of the unhearalded Rite Aid Team.
