KnoxieCross Winter Cyclocross Series: Race #4

Knoxie-Cross 2007 is over. Here is a brief replay of what happened.
There was a big hill. Some rode it, most ran it. It was a little muddy and it had some grass on it.
More specifically in the A race David Talbott (used to ride for Moab, has a new team for 07 but I can't remember it - he did race in Europe last year with the U.S. Junior National Team) rode it fairly consistently to distance himself from Knoxie-Cross #2 winner Sam Evans (Druid City Bicycle Club) and Knoxie-Cross #3 winner Michael Biegalski. With regards to the series overall, Chad Black (Nob Hill Velo) finished fifth to take the series overall, while Joel Marshall and Corey Rimmer (both Knox Velo or what was Knox Velo) took the race to the line with Joel beating Corey today and taking second place in the series over Corey's third.
Today's B race was an exciting affair with the series overall up for grabs between three riders. Also exciting was Jamie Dinkins (Vantaggio-Specialized/SCV) winning the TrueSport prime as the first rider in the B race to ride up the hill on the second lap (I forgot to announce the TrueSport prime for the A race, so this week the B's got the money). She then went on the win the B race. Thomas Gaines (Harper's Bike Shop) took second, with Greg Casteel (Knox Velo) riding strongly to take third. Greg, Wayne Nix (Hammer Nutrition) and Caleb Ryan (Bike Zoo) battled early on, but Greg rode the best on the day and finished ahead of Wayne and Caleb in the race with Greg and Wayne tying for first in the series overall with Caleb taking third in the series.
In the C race, it was another TCRC sweep. Mike Mefford won with Dwayne Letterman in second and Larry Bishop in third. They shared the same podium positions for the series overall. All that riding in the Mud Sweat and Gears 'cross series prepared them well for this Knoxie-Cross season.
The women's race was a family affair, with the Whitaker's Julie and Kayla holding a 'cross clinic, taking first and second with Kim Bishop (TCRC) finishing third. By taking the win today, Julie Whitaker won the series overall, Kayla took second and Kim finished third.
Last but not least, the Junior's finished up the series today. Stephen Bassett continued his string of strong rides to win today and take the series overall. Bruce Boles was second today with a strong ride amongst the C and Women's field, and Levi Marland finished third today. Matt Whitaker was fourth today but his consistent riding snagged him second in the series overall, and Max Hansett took the third spot in absentia. In unrelated news, Matt did not have his radar gun this week. Few things make your ego feel worse at the end of the race then to have someone point a radar gun (at least that is what it looked like) at you as you beg your legs to keep turning a 36/19 and yell "Go faster!". Well, maybe crashing into a parked car in front of a bunch of your teammates because you didn't know that Shimano SPD's and SPD clones aren't really the same thing is worse. For those who have never had this experience, clipping in is like a roach motel, you can get in but you can't get out.
Here are some final thoughts and and thanks about Knoxie-Cross. Thanks to all the racers who came out to the series. I definitely saw some good racing and riding and met some really cool people. Your participation meant that I had the chance to help John George, Caleb, Phil and a few others plan some challenging courses. Thanks to John for listening to my ideas about courses and putting on Knoxie-Cross so that I had something to keep me off the streets this winter. Finally, I've got some ideas on lengthening the Morningside Park course as well as today's course for next year. Come out next year and check them out.
