The first Knoxie-Cross race of 2007 is now in the books. With a local forecast that only 48 hours earlier had promised fifty degress and rain, racers headed out to Morningside Park and were greeted by high fifty degree weather and sun. No need for a bike wash today.
Starting off the action were the A men. Spurned on (maybe) by the Truesport Rabbit (me getting a 2 minute head start), the A men scorched the first lap of the course, riding their first full lap almost 45 seconds faster then anticipated. Catching the Truesport Rabbit got you back your entry fee. As the Truesport Rabbit getting caught meant I could stop. Watching the race over my shoulder for the first 20 (Ok, first 18:30) minutes I saw some pretty exciting action. Chains blowed up, a lip opened up on one of the grass/pavement transitions and killed some tubes and there were a few slide outs. In the end, the winner of the Truesport Rabbit's Pelt was Andrew Howe (Knox Velo). Howe also won the race.
Finishing a strong second after working back from an early crash then a flat was Chad Black (Nob Hill Velo). Rounding out the paying spots was Luke Whitaker (Knox Velo) who was able to ride the gravel pit that I thought looked like a trip to the ER.
Next up were the Killer B's. Lots more B's then A's. A swarm of B's, if you will. Regardless, Bob Davies offered up a prime to the first rider to finish the first lap and a half. Grabbing the prime with both hands was Michael Biegalski (I think his white jersey means unattached) who also grabbed the whole race. Finishing in second was Thomas Gaines (Harpers Bike Shop) followed in third by Wayne Nix (Hammer Solutions). Both rode very consistently and faster than I did.
The Tri-Cities Road Club took over the C race, with TCRC riders Dwayne Letterman and Mike Mefford taking over the race in the first lap. Eric Mohn (and I had some trouble keeping track of peoples teams from this point on) finished third. Also running with the C race was the Women's and Junior's race. Patricia Smith won the women's race, with Kayla and Julie Whitaker taking second and third (both riding for Knox Velo). In the Junior race Stephen Bassett displayed excellent form, winning the Junior race ahead of Zack Darby and Matt Whitaker.
