The
3rd Annual Village of Winona Criterium is sure to become one of
the premiere cycling events in Indiana. The promoters of the event
have worked hard to mix together the right ingredients for success
- an overwhelming supportive community, a fantastic race course,
and a most-righteous prize list!!!
The
.55 mile 4-corner course was located in the heart of the Village
of Winona Lake, a picturesque community located on the banks of
Lake Winona. The sunny skies and 70 degree temps made for exquisite
race conditions. However, for some odd reason, the wind was blowing
from the east but somehow managed to deliver a headwind from the
southwest along the lakefront. Just enough to put the hurt on
any solo move off the front.

The CAT
1/2/3 fielded riders from Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois. The field
was paced for the first lap by a sparkling white Ford GT - quite possibly
the finest American muscle car of today. The CAT 1/2/3 event hosted
a prize list of $1,500 with more than 15 primes. To top things off,
the Ford GT went to anyone who could catch it.
The race
quickly came down to a duel between 2 of the strongest teams in our
region - ABD Cycling Team from Illinois and Texas Roadhouse Cycling
Team from Kentucky. Both teams put two riders in the break. Texas Roadhouse's
powerhouse, Patrick O'Donnell, attacked the break once they reached
contact with the field. ABD's Reid Mumford quickly responded along with
a few others. O'Donnell and Mumford battled it out for the remaining
laps while ABD's, Bryce Mead with teammate John Puffer in-tow, kept
the field in check at a what seemed like a ridiculous pace until the
finish. ABD's Mumford took the victory with Roadhouse's O'Donnell taking
runner-up and ABD's Puffer rounding
out the top three.
No one
caught the GT...
Lastly,
the racer's truly appreciated the efforts of the Promoter and the Community
for organizing a top-notch event. For those who missed it, PUT THIS
RACE ON YOUR CALENDAR FOR NEXT YEAR!!!
On a
side note, local Hero, Jeff Noffsinger was representin' in the CAT 4/5
race after ripping off a 1:19 and change the previous day in Indy at
the Mini-Marathon. Kudos to Jeff!!
