How do you explain to a child that a classmate was tied with duct tape and her throat slashed along with her family?

The culprits of such a crime defy any metaphors or descriptions for adults.

But now, Rick Barlow’s duty as a father is to explain to his children why not all people want to help and protect children.

On New Year’s Day, firefighters found the Harvey family murdered in the basement of their quiet Woodland Heights home in Richmond. More violence and murder followed, but the death of Bryan and Kathryn Harvey’s children Stella, 9, and Ruby, 4, especially stunned anyone who heard the story.

Here’s a link to the full story.

“The events are troublesome for anyone to understand and even more so for those who have children and who are new to parenthood. I did not know the Harvey family personally but my children and fellow cyclists Jake and Emily Helmboldt’s child attend the Second Presbyterian Daycare where Ruby was enrolled,” said Barlow.

In honor of Ruby and her family, Richmond Ciclismo will be donating all the money from our cyclocross race on Sunday, January 15th at Bryan Park. The donation will be from the Virginia cycling community and it will go to a scholarship fund that the Second Presbyterian Daycare has created in memory of Ruby and her family.”

Altius Family and Sports Medicine and Rowletts Bicycle shop organized this event. According to Altius’ Dr. Matt Marchal, cyclists raised $850 for the scholarship.

Every lap, cyclists bogged down in a rain soaked field, steered through single-track woods, bunny hopped felled trees and dismounted and hurdled two sets of barriers. The course finished on a asphalt surface. Strong winds kept organizers and volunteers scrambling to tack down course tape

“The Virginia Cyclocross Series is a points series with races around the state and selects an individual and a team state champ,” said Marchal. “One of the requirements is to have a hosted a successful cross race the year before, and hopefully this helps us to get in the series next year to help in crowning the State cyclocross champs.”
