Jackson Stewart Sprints to Win in Commerce Bank Tom Bamford Lancaster Classic Benefiting Fox Chase Cancer Center
First Leg of Commerce Bank Triple Crown in the Books

June 04, 2006
On a cool day in Lancaster the Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling got off to a flying start with Jackson Stewart (Kokakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada) sprinting to a huge victory after a long day of aggressive racing. The win launches him into the lead of the prestigious three race series. The winner of the overall Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling Series title will receive a new Mercury Mariner Hybrid as well as a large chuck of the $10,000 overall prize.

As a large Lancaster crowd welcomed the Professional Men to the start line riders braced themselves for the historically fast and furious 13 lap race. True to form opportunistic riders were on the attack from the first lap. At the mid-way point of the race a group of seven broke clear with most of the big teams represented. In the break were Scott Zwinzanski (Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada), Jonathan Page (Colavita-Sutter Home), Caleb Manion (Jelly Belly), Tony Cruz (Toyota-United), Kirk O’Bee (Health Net-Maxxis) and Mike Friedman (TIAA-CREF). The one team not to make the move was the powerful Danish squad CSC.
When the break’s gap went past one minute the CSC machine went to work pulling the break back. With Bobby Julich and Andrea Peron driving at the front, the gap began to tumble and with three laps to go the break was as good as over. As the break was being re-absorbed the opportunistic Kazakhstan, Sergey Lagutin (Navigators Insurance) jumped clear on his own and established a workable gap but on the last lap he was caught and a field sprint looked likely. With the field shredded to a main group of only 40 riders teams with numbers began to think about setting up their sprinters for the finish.

“I hit out hard” said race winner Stewart as he described the race final, “I was intending to give Martin Gilbert a good lead-out but when I looked back I had a gap and just kept going”. This was the biggest win of Stewart’s career and possibly for the Kodakgallery.com-Sierra Nevada this season. Juan Jose Haedo (Toyota-United) was able to close in on Stewart before the line but he ran out of road and had to settle for an excellent second place. After his aggressive late race tactics, Sergey Lagutin was able to put in a good sprint as well and climbed onto the final step of the podium.

Riders will take three days off before heading to Reading for the Commerce Bank Reading Classic on Thursday and the second stop of the Triple Crown of Cycling.
