The 2006 edition of the Hell of the North (Salt Lake) on April 1 was one for the books. A cold front hit the Wasatch Valley just as the Pro 1/2 race was lining up. The temperatures dropped from 50 to 38 degrees and the heavy rain started switching over to sleet and snow. The course was a flat 5 mile course with 1.75 miles of dirt road.

As the field hit the start/finish line after the first lap, Navigator Insurance rider Burke Swindlehurst attacked up the left side. The group of 6 which included Kevin Radinski (FFRC/Sportsbaseonline), Dave Harward (Specialized/Porcupine), Sam Krieg (ICE), Ryan Barrett (Sienna Development-Goble Knee), Eric Flynn (Park City Cycling Academy) and Swindlehurst quickly established a gap on the field. On the third lap Jeff Louder (HeathNet) and Skylere Bingham (Specialized/Porcupine) attacked out of the field in an attempt to bridge to the front group.

Swindlehurst worked hard on the front of the break to keep a charging Louder off the break. Attrition took its toll throughout as the break and the field dwindled in size. With one lap to go, both Barrett and Flynn had unfortunate flats. That left Swindlehurst, Harward and Krieg to duke it out for the win. On the flat windy run in to the finish Harward outkicked Krieg and Swindlehurst for the win.
