Click Image for Photo GalleryEvent number 5 of the season long 2006 Michigan Challenge Road Racing Series (www.mbra.org) was the Sunrise Sports Allen Park Criterium located in Allen Park, Michigan on Saturday, June 17, 2006.
Held on a 1km circuit through an office park, the Sunrise Sports Allen Park Criterium is your straightforward office park criterium. This year a very strong headwind blowing down the straightaway through the start/finish area made the race much tougher than usual. Combined with an especially hot and humid day, the race turned it into a tactical and physical battle. Racers had to have the smarts to attack in the right section of the course and then make sure they had the legs and endurance to make the attack stick!With the first race starting at 830am with the Juniors, until 300pm with the start of the Men's Pro/1/2 Category field, a whole day of racing action was on deck. An added bonus was that this year's race was part of the 2006 Michigan Cat I/II TEAM CUP CHALLENGE. A HUGE field of 75 Cat I/II riders showed up to make this race one of the biggest criteriums in Michigan.
In every category the racing was fast! The forgiving turns, howling headwind and long, open straight sections made it difficult for riders to break-away from the pack, but that didn't stop many from trying. With a truck full of merchandise primes which were provided by our sponsors, especially Sunrise Sports, BLUE Competition Cycles, CLIF Bar, Jittery Joe's Coffee Roasting Company, Midwest Cycling Group and Ritchey Bicycle Components and racers were attacking like racing greyhounds with sun stroke throughout each race!
In the Men's Pro I/II race, Tony Bruley and Adam McClounie of the Wolverine Sports Club laid down a blistering attack which saw these two riding away from the field. Within only a couple of laps the total field was BLOWN apart with riders stretched across the course single file and at times in as many as 5-6 separate groups. This situation created a minor crisis for the officials who struggled to keep track of who was where in the race. The solution was to begin pulling groups of riders who were being lapped not by 1 lead group, but also by the following 2+ chasing groups.
In the end a total of nearly 50 riders were pulled from the original 75 rider field, with the officials resorting to a video review of the race to ensure the results were correct. The winner of the race was Rob Daksiewicz of Ford/Giant/AAVC, who had bridged up to Tony Bruley to form a 2 rider break which they maintained until the finish, with Rob out sprinting Tony for the win.
Final tally for the day was a total of 300+ riders competing for a super day of criterium racing!
