Cold temperatures, blue skies and frozen ground greeted the racers at round six, the final race in the Tailwind cyclocross series. At the start line was a stake in the USCF Michigan State CycloCross Championship. The 80 plus riders were greeted by a new twisty technical course that was laid out around the future site of the new Mike Walden Velodrome. After only two laps of the eight-lap race, Jeff Weinert (Independent Fabrications/GS Blauwkamp), Jonathan Card (Cane Creek/Essex) and Russ Tiles (Quiring Cycles) opened up a 30-second gap on the chase group in the mens race. "At that point in the race I knew I was the stronger racer and that it would eventually come down to finding the right place to make my attack," Weinert said. As the laps continued to click by, the gap over the chasing group grew to more than a minute. With four laps to go Weinert made a number of small attacks and Card was the only one to respond, staying with the Independent Fabrication rider. Then, on the bell lap, Weinert attacked hard through the last run-up section pulling away from card in the last 100 meters to win the Championship. In the women's race, Jody Koch (Team Ameritech) charged away from the small womens field at the start and never looked back. She won with a comfortable lead over Karen Mckee and Shari Hausbeck (Wolverine cycling club). Men's A-Race: 34 and under
