Phil Noble and Todd ShobergWith only one race held in wet conditions out of the last 15 cross events held in Cincinnati, Ohio, some would say we were about due. Scattered showers held the forecast throughout the Thanksgiving Day weekend, and by race day, we had soggy race conditions. But all considered, we had a fast course once again, with only one or two spots that were boggin down the tires. Using the Dave Carr Mud Index (members.aol.com/napavelo/mud.htm), we were seeing some variance between Grade 4 (play dough) to Grade 6 (slime) conditions out in the nature trails. The rest of the course was up high in the grass, and gave us fast conditions.
Start of the A RaceThe A race saw the fastest local racing of the season, with Todd Shoberg (Sobe-Headshok) attempting to put the field away early in the first lap. His aggressive first lap was only matched by local pro Phil Noble (Airborne-Kenda), and stretched the rest of the field thin very early. Mitch Graham (Bio Wheels-Jamis) and Benjamin Sharp (Tonistaner) traded leads a minute behind the leaders, while Dave Peterson (KHS), Charley Miller (Bio Wheels-Jamis), and Mike Kalan (Schwinn) formed a three man pack another minute behind. Noble and Shoberg never let up on the pace, and began lapping riders after 20 minutes of racing. Noble put a late race move on Shoberg and kept his undefeated streak alive in the area. Graham gained some space on Sharp to secure third place, while Miller pulled away from his group late in the race to round out the top five.
Start of the B RaceThe B race was highlighted by the battle to the finish by Thomas Hanley and Andrew Allwein (Trycycles-Motorex). The 50 minute race was settled by a wheel, with Hanley taking the victory. Lisa Matlock (Sobe-Headshok) put on the strongest womens performance ever in the series, taking third overall in the B race. Rick Toler (Team Dayton) and Harry Wicks (Bluegrass) stayed close the entire race in the 35+ B category, with Toler pulling off the win.
The Cs saw some fast racing, as T.R. Hill (LWRT) and Marcus Bonito (Bike Pedlar) separated themselves early from the field, and traded leads through the first few laps. Bonito pulled out the win, taking the Cs in 35:40. James Whaley took the 35+ class with a third overall. Rose Petrick came down from Cleveland to take the womens category in 48:58.
On a sad note, photographers and spectators who came out to see the bunny-hopping ace, Matt Bell (Bio Wheels-Jamis) sky over obstacles, were in tears, as their star pinch-flatted in the first lap and was forced out of the race. Twice as many spectators lined the wet course this Sunday than last. Thanks to all who came out to watch and race. Next Sunday is our final race in the series. Lets make it a great one!
