Women's Sports and Fitness: Run, Skate, Cycle
August 28, 1999
New York, NY
Category Pro, 1,2,3 National Points Series - Summary:
By Victor Vitelli, Race DirectorWith clear skies and a stiff breeze, the American women's peloton again took to the streets of New York City for the third running of the annual Women's Sports and Fitness Criterium. And while prior years were fast, this year was blazing. In the Category 1,2,3 race, the average speed was 28mph for nearly 35 miles. The course was the same as in years prior -a winding, hilly, approximately 1-mile loop on the streets surrounding Grant's Tomb and The Riverside Church in Manhattan's Upper West Side.
Racing started very fast, with the early laps averaging close to 30mph, which shattered the 80-rider field. Notably, the field size is the largest in New York's history for women's bicycle racing. The sheer size of the race dictated an extreme pace, which prevented all early attacks from staying away. Finally on lap 26 a trio comprised of Team Saturn's Anna Wilson, Timex's Kendra Wenzel -riding solo, and Charles Schwab's Heather Albert managed to attack from the front and establish a gap.
With the remainder of Charles Schwab and Saturn minding the front of the field -though still keeping the pace very high- the trio maintained a solid gap until the finish. The breakaway's final sprint was a 100-meter, uphill drag race with Wilson narrowly beating Wenzel and Albert hanging tightly for third. Wilson's win maintains Saturn's 1998 win by Dede Demet.
Back in the field, supermom, Barbara Gradley, from Aquidneck Bicycle Club, also riding solo, managed to attack off the front coming into bell lap and held off a 5 woman chase group to win 4th place. Laura Van Gilder of Team
Navigators won the field sprint five seconds behind the chase. It should be noted that during the day's racing, Riverside Church, completely within the race enclosure, somehow managed to hold a funeral and two weddings. Watch for the movie version: Two Weddings a Funeral and a Bike Race

by Gerri Moriarty, PC ConnectionCongratulations to Dannette Daniels and Brooke O'Connor for winning their respective races at the Women's Sports and Fitness Run, Skate and Cycle at Grant's Tomb on Saturday! It was a great, women's focused event with generous prize lists for all fields.
In the Cat 3 race, Brooke O'Connor from NEBC got the assist of the day from teammate Sara Cushman who gave her the leadout she needed to put a decisive gap on the rest of the field in the final sprint. Anne Marie Miller from CRCA beat the rest of the field of almost 50 riders to take 2nd.
What a great day for the free coaching clinics from Karen Bliss Livingston! Karen held both pre and post race talks for participants and handed out Koulius Zaard waterbottles to women whom she observed making smart moves. Over 40 people attended and listened to Karen, and many Cat 3 riders attended later to speak with her after they finished their 1-2-3 race. The clinic was well received with many positive comments afterwards. Thanks to Karen, for flying up from Atlanta to do this for Series participants!
