Virginia Supercross Series Race #7
The Jack Frost Cyclocross
Walnut Creek Park, Charlottesville, VA

Race Report -

Mother Nature conspired to ruin the race's namesake as she brought temperatures in the low 60's and sunny skies to central Virginia, but few of the 40-odd cyclocross racers who came out seemed to complain!

Charlottesville's Will Frischkorn again showed why is one of the Juniors representing the U.S. at the World Cyclocross Championships in Poprad, Slovakia later this month as he rode away with ease from the Pro/Expert field halfway into the first 3 km lap and never looked back.  After the first time up the course's leg breaking climb and subsequent run-up hill, a group of 3 comprised of Bill McCarrick (MVC/PowerBar), Ryan McKinney (William & Mary) and Dee Owen (Blazing Saddles) came together on the long paved section through the finish area and worked together as much as possible to catch Frischkorn.  As the race progressed, the chase group could get no closer than 2 minutes behind Frischkorn as Owen dropped from the group and was replaced by his roommate, Richmond bike messenger Charlie Bowman.  In the end, Frischkorn rode in solo with a 3 minute lead, happing lapped all but the first 8 riders.  The Guinness Stout-powered Bowman outran McCarrick and McKinney to the line, and ever-powerful 47 year old Fred Wittwer (MVC/PowerBar) took an impressive fifth place.

In the Sport race, former semi-pro mountain biker Steve Heatherington showed that he has lost little of his class as he powered away to a solo victory in his first race in several years.  Keeping as close as possible to him was Scott Curlee, another racer making a comeback - in his case, to the road scene.  Charlottesville bike shop owner and cyclocross stalwart Scott Paisley (MVC/PowerBar) took a close third place ahead of Mark Miklosovich (NCVC).

In the Beginners race, Doug Rock of Kent's Store, VA took first in a solo win ahead of Eric Holmes and Anthony Nappi, both of Charlottesville.  Impressive to watch was eventual fifth place finisher and downhill mountain biker Kalan Bunch, who bunny-hopped about half of the course's 12, 12-inch high barriers on each lap.

The 12-race Virginia Supercross Series resumes Jan. 24 at Forest Hill Park in Richmond, comes back to Charlottesville's McIntire Park for a race on Jan. 31st, before taking a week hiatus and finishing off the series with 3 races in February - February 14 in Richmond, and February 21 and 28 at Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg, the heart of Virginia horse country.  Women and Juniors race free of charge at all VA Supercross events.
