Men 1-3 Report
Conditions: Sunny, 80 degrees, and a westerly wind at 5-15 mph.
Distance: 72 miles. 18 laps including 3 laps up the Gamber Wall.
81 riders starting
Lap 1-3: Pretty much right from the gun the action started with Mark Light(snow valley) and Chadd Martin (excite/ smart fuel) getting away and getting up to a 55 second lead. Casey Williams and his protege, Josh Smith (remember this name) also got clear of the field and at on point were within 30 seconds of the leaders. The field, content to go at a moderate pace soon found themsleves caught by the 4/5 field.Laps 4-6: Williams and Beck were caught as the 1/2/3's tried to rid themselves of the 4/5's. The pace was turned up one more time and as the last of the 4/5's came off the group, the lead went from :55 to :20 to "groupetto compacto" in 2 laps.
7 - 12: Im not exactly sure of all that transpired here except that Mark Light attacked a couple more times and finally got free with Andrew "the Elf" Elstien ( TSV, cat 3 soon to be cat 1), Rod Meyers (All Sport in his first race of the year), Phil Cable ( Enzymatic Therapy), Carlos Rogers ( Bicycle Therapy), and Chad Martin. The group was working well together and all of the major team were represented. Approaching the start finish area, Rod went off the road and went down hard, taking Carlos with him.
Laps 12: The first time up the hill. With the break diminished in size and now 2 teams no longer represented, things looked touch and go as the peleton prepared to attack the Gamber wall the first time. The break had about 35 seconds going into the wall when Chadd Martin found the early effort too much and came off the break.
Laps 13-14: The break held it's slim lead between 25-45 seconds for the next two laps.
Lap 15 Wall #2: Before the wall Jeff Rutter bridged up to the leaders giving Snow Valely 2 riders in the break. Scott Henry ( Harrisburg) lead the group up the wall while Torrey Marks sat near the front ready to shut down and chasing effort.
15-18: Despite some sprited effort from the deminishing main group, the breaks lead continue to grow. With two in the break, Snow Valley was determined to drive the break and Rutter provided more than enough horsepower. By the finish the lead was up over a minute. Rutter lead the group until 200m when Cable started his sprint. Light sat tucked in until 50M to go. The final drag race saw Light exact his revenge from Christiana and take the victory. Cable 2nd, Elstien and Rutter followed. The rest of the field finishe din small groups as the field broke apart under the pressure of the final lap. Full results follow.Other notes:
- Rod Meyers in his first race of the year suffered from a bad crash. He is currently in Lancaster General for xray and observation. A broken clavicle is for sure, other injuries are to be determined.
- The leaders did an esitmated 72 miles in 3:15. average speed about 22.2 mph. I suspect that either the mileage or time was off a bit. Perhaps someone in the race can give more accurate numbers.
- Pitcure will be posted on www.manortwp.org as soon as we get them developed and scanned in. If anyone has any picture of the race or awards, please contact me.
- an excellent job was done by the official, motos, and marshals. Things were especially hairy with the 4/5 men and 1/2/3 mixed, but they did a good job of sorting things out.
- For next year we will definately have no more than 3, most likely 2 groups on the course at the same time.
- Thank you to everyone who came out, I hope you enjoyed yourselves.
- Reports and results of the other races will follow.
