24th Annual Joe Matava Memorial Classic Criterium
and
Washington State Juniors Championship Criterium
July 4, 1999
Burien, WA
A big thank you to all of you who came out and took part in the 24th Annual Joe Matava Memorial Classic Criterium and Washington State Juniors Championship Criterium. We had a total of 185 licensed riders (some from as far as Duluth, GA and San Francisco, CA) and 23 children (aged 4 to 13) who participated. The weather cooperated just about perfectly, overcast and cool, with a little sunshine for the Cat 3 and Cat 1/2 races (just right for us NW riders!).
Martin Weeks of Pazzo Velo/Saturn of Bellevue has staked a serious claim to the Men's Category 1/2 race! For the third year in row Marty beat everyone to the line with an outstanding sprint (in addition he took 4 of the 14 available primes). Marty was followed by Michael Hainsworth (Wizards of the Coast) and Luke Maaritisen (Wizards of the Coast) in second and third places.
Tony Scott of FFCC (Duluth, GA) was in the area visiting friends for the Fourth of July Weekend. While he was here he raced in and won the Men's Category 3 race (in addition to taking 3 of 12 available primes). A week before the race Tony told me to make out the first place check in his name, I guess he knew what he was talking about! Richard Juntunen (Aurora Cycles) and Don Wesley (Mongoose) took second and third places.Thank you to all of you who went over to Sal's Deli and used your prize certificates or bought food or beverages. The owner made a point of saying how polite and friendly all the racers were. That is exactly the kind of comments promoters want to hear from sponsors! Thank You!
