Mason Lake Series #3
Mason Lake, WA
March 20, 1999

What a beautiful day! 65 degrees and sunny in March!
The Mens Category 1-2 field was the strongest yet with Team Oregon making it presence known in Washington for the first time this year. The 84-mile (7-lap) race started off fast with a strong three-man break in the first 5 miles. The break included Michael Emde (Exodus), David Johnson (Team Oregon) and Chris McCoy (Recycled Cycles). A lap later these three had established a solid 3 minute gap on the field but the long break started to take its toll with Chris McCoy being the first to drift back to the pack on lap 4. Emde had to do most of the work with Johnson hanging on to no avail. Emde dropped Johnson on lap 6 to go it alone into the head wind that had just started to pick-up. At this time the Saturn of Bellevue and Team Oregon riders started to work to bring Emdes 3-minute gap back down to 30 sec. with ¾ of a lap to go. With Emde in sight Richard McClung (Pacific Financial Services) saw his opportunity and bridged up to the tired but not done Emde. McClung took a few monster pulls with Emde in-tow and they quickly opened a one-minute gap on the lethargic field. After being out front for 77 miles Emde was able to work with McClung to put a total of two and half minute gap on the field. With this effort McClung won the race and the overall series at the first ever Mason Lake Road Race Series. Emde earned the "strong man" award for the day.
