Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli Crushes Field To Win Second Stage And Take The Overall Lead Of The HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge

Idaho City, ID, June 10 –  France’s Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli, the greatest women cyclist in history, proved she is still one of the most dangerous riders in the world by blowing away the field to win the second stage of the 1999 HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge.  Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly) pushed the pace on the ascent of the 6,800-foot Banner Summit, holding off several challengers, including defending champion Linda Jackson (Timex) and Mari Holden (HP Toner).  Longo-Ciprelli soloed the remaining 26 miles to claim the stage, one minute, 37 seconds ahead of the 12-rider chase group.   Lithuanian Diana Ziliute (HP Toner) took second, and teammate Mari Holden, of Colorado Springs, CO was third, the highest placing US rider.

“I was in a little pain this morning and thought I would just ride slowly early to see how I felt.  When no one pushed the pace I decided to take responsibility,” said Longo-Ciprelli.  “I train in altitude so I feel really at ease in the mountains.”

Twelve-Time World Champion Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli
Propels Ebly To Team Time Trial Victory In Sixth Stage Of
The HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge

Massacre Rocks, ID, June 13 – Captained by overall race leader, Frenchwoman Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli, Team Ebly was the only one of 22 teams to break the one-hour mark in Stage 6, the HP Mopier Team Time Trial, a 25-mile out and back course.  Their time of 59 minutes and one second was enough for a one minute and 20 second cushion over second place HP Toner, who finished the hilly course in one hour and 21 seconds.  In the Team Time Trial, each six-member team rides together, starting at five-minute intervals.   The team’s time is determined by the third rider to cross the finish line.   In the overall team standings, Ebly and HP Toner both have a cumulative time of 29 hours, 13 minutes and 54 seconds.

“I told my team I want this to be easy (the stage), I want to rest,” said Longo-Ciprelli in anticipation of tomorrow’s grueling 109-mile stage race. “I was not expecting to win the stage.”

When asked about her chances of retaining the overall race lead after tomorrow’s stage, Longo-Ciprelli replied “I am not sure I will have it tomorrow night.”

Germany's Ina Teutenberg Shatters Course Record

American Falls, ID, June 14 - The course record was broken by nearly 20 minutes when Germany's Ina Teutenberg (German National Team) outsprinted Australian Anna Wilson (Saturn) in the 109-mile HP Digital Sender Road Race, the longest road race for women ever, winning in a time of 4 hours, 40 minutes and 25 seconds.  Today's 7th stage marked the halfway point in the HP LaserJet Women's Challenge, a 12-day, 13-stage bike race being contested by a strong international field, including Olympic Gold Medalists: Lithuanian Zulfia Zabirova (HP Toner), Australian Kathy Watts (Boise Cascade Office Products), Germany's Petra Rossner (German National Team) and Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly) of France, who is currently the overall race leader, over American Mari Holden (HP Toner).

Today's first and second place result was a reversal of Stage 1, when Wilson edged Teutenberg in a photo finish.

Tomorrow's 8th stage, the 66.2 mile HP Personal LaserJet Road Race runs from Massacre Rocks to Pomerelle and features a climb to an elevation of 8,000 feet, which could have a significant impact on the overall standings .

Defending Champion Linda Jackson Battles Back From Crash To Win 8th
Stage Of HP LaserJet Women's Challenge

Pomerelle, ID, June 15 - Canadian Olympian Linda Jackson (Timex) proved why she is considered one of the foremost climbers in the world by overcoming an early crash to solo to victory in the hilltop finish of Stage 8, the HP Personal LaserJet Road Race, in 2 hours, 54 minutes and 7 seconds.  America's top rider, Mari Holden (HP Toner), finished second, 46 seconds off the pace, in a time of 2 hours, 54 minutes and 53 seconds.   Overall race leader Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly), herself overcoming an early flat, finished 7th, one minute and 14 seconds back.

Just 9 miles into the 66.2-mile mountainous stage, Jackson, in an attempt to avoid a 25- rider pile-up, swerved onto the shoulder and into 3 inches of gravel and crashed, sustaining massive road rash (abrasions) over the majority of her right side. Jackson's victory moves her into 2nd place overall, 1 minute and 11 seconds behind Longo-Ciprelli.

"We let her (Longo-Ciprelli) intimidate us at Banner (Summit, Stage 2)…Darn if I was going to let Longo intimidate me again," said Jackson. "After the crash, I had to ignore the pain and how much I hurt and keep going."

Records Continue To Be Broken As International Olympians Dominate The
Top Three Placings in The 9th Stage Of The HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge

Buhl, ID, June 16 –Olympian Sarah Ulmer (Elita) of New Zealand soloed away from a seven-woman breakaway with less than three miles to go in Stage 9, the 84.2-mile HP Paper Road Race, to win in 3 hours, 1 minute and 32 seconds, breaking the four-year old course record by nearly 23 minutes.  Olympic Gold Medallist (’92) Kathy Watt (Australia, Boise Cascade) barely outsprinted Olympian Susy Pryde (New Zealand, Saturn) for second place, 33 seconds off the pace.  American Brenda Black (Scapin) initiated the breakaway just eight miles into the relatively flat stage.  With temperatures approaching 100 degrees and the wind at their back, the break averaged more than 27-mph for the remaining 75 miles.

Surprised by her record-breaking ride, Ulmer, the 1998 Commonwealth Games 3000-meter Pursuit Gold medallist, quipped  “I hope there is a headwind for the next 30 years.”

Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly) finished with the main field, 3 minutes and 6 seconds off the record pace to retain the blue overall race leader’s jersey.

Record Broken For Third Consecutive Day As
Olympic Gold Medallist Zoulfija Zabirova Soloed To
Victory At The HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge

Glenns Ferry, ID, June 17 –The reigning Olympic Time Trial Gold Medallist, Zoulfija Zabirova (HP Toner) of Lithuania, soloed to victory in record time by winning Stage 10’s 76.7-mile HP LaserJet All-in-One Road Race in a time of 3 hours and 15 seconds. Winning the battle for second in a ferocious field sprint, 11 seconds off the pace, was the 1992 Pursuit Olympic Gold Medallist Petra Rossner  (German National). The 1994 Goodwill Games Gold Medallist Brooke Blackwelder (Goldy’s) of Boise, ID bested the 53-rider main field to hold onto 3rd place.

Having started today’s stage not feeling well, Zabirova made her winning move shortly after Saturn’s Lynn Bessette was reeled in from a 46 mile solo breakaway.   “I told my teammates I’m not feeling good today but
with 6 kilometers to go I got a second wind and decided I would try,” said Zabirova with a smile.

Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly) finished with the main field, 9 seconds off the record pace to retain the blue overall race leader’s jersey for the 7th straight day.

Two-Time World Time Trial Champion Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli Increases Her
Lead By Winning Stage 11 Of The HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge

Melba, ID, June 18 – The hour world record holder, Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly), 40, of France continued her dominance in the HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge by winning the hilly 24.8 mile Individual Time Trial in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 13 seconds.   Taking second in the “race of truth,”  was the 1998 Pan-Am Individual Time Trial Gold
Medallist, Elizabeth Emery (Celestial Seasonings) from Philadelphia, PA, with a time of 1 hour, 4 minutes and 8 seconds.  Rounding out the top three was two-time Australian National Time Trial Champion Anna Wilson
(Saturn), in a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes.

Several riders, including Longo-Ciprelli, exchanged their road bike for a specialized time trial bike after an initial 1.5 mile climb out of the canyon on a hill with a 12% grade. Emery, the former U.S. National Time Trial Champion, started the day in 77th place overall and with her impressive performance rocketed to 17th in the overall general classification.  American Mari Holden (HP Toner) reclaimed the number 2 spot with her 8th place finish today in a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes and 42 seconds.  Canadian Linda Jackson (Timex) fell three spots to 5th overall with her disappointing 19th place finish in 1 hour, 8 minutes and 7 seconds.

Germany’s Ina Teutenberg Wins The HP LaserJet Criterium For the Second
Straight Year In The HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge

Boise, ID, June 19 – Ina Teutenberg (German National), the former three-time Junior World Champion stood atop the podium for the second time in the HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge by winning the sprint of the next to last stage, a 45-lap criterium held on a .77- mile figure eight course in downtown Boise, in a time of  1 hour, 21 minutes and 59 seconds. Canadian Lyne Bessette (Saturn) and Jennifer McRae (Timex) of Austin, TX finished second and third respectively.  Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly) finished with the field to maintain her position
as the overall race leader by 3 minutes and 43 seconds over American Mari Holden (HP Toner).

Teutenberg was in an early break with one of her biggest rivals, Australia’s Anna Wilson (Saturn), who started the day only four points down in the Overall Points Leader Competition (the best cyclist in all the various competitions: Mountain, Hot Spot Sprints and Stage Finishes).  After Wilson collected enough points in the designated Hot Spot Sprint laps, claiming the red Points Leader Jersey from Holden (HP Toner), the break was absorbed by the field.  With 24 laps to go, three-time World Mountain Bike Champion Alison Sydor (Canadian National) initiated a seven-woman break, including Teutenberg, and they eventually lapped the field.

Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli Proves She’s The World’s Greatest Cyclist By
Decisively Winning The Richest And Longest Stage Race In North America,
The HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge

Boise, ID, June 20 – The 12-time World Champion, Olympic Gold Medallist, Hour Record Holder and winningest cyclist with over 575 career victories, Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Ebly), thoroughly dominated a strong international field throughout the 12-day, 13-stage HP LaserJet Women’s Challenge, winning by 3 minutes and 41 seconds over her nearest competitor, American Mari Holden (HP Toner).  Longo-Ciprelli, with the help of her powerful Ebly teammates, took control of the race in stage two, never relinquishing the blue Race Leader’s jersey over the
remaining 11 stages.

Today’s conclusive stage, the HP LaserJet Supplies Road Race, proved fast and aggressive as teams attacked over the entire 50.6 miles.  With the field intact over the final three miles,  the 21 remaining teams began setting up their sprinters for the explosive field sprint. 1992 Olympic Pursuit Gold Medallist Petra Rossner, was the fastest as she
narrowly outsprinted American Karen Dunne (Goldy’s).  Dunne, however, kept the purple Sprint Leader’s jersey which she has worn since Stage 1.  Rossner’s victory was a repeat of last year’s final stage finish.
