'99 USCF CYCLO-CROSS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS SLATED FOR CALIFORNIA
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (Apr. 19, 1999) - The 1999 United States Cycling Federation (USCF) National Cyclo-Cross Championships will be held Dec. 10-11 in the San Francisco Bay Area, it was announced Monday.
"Northern California is one of the top cyclo-cross areas in the United States, and we are excited to return to the area to continue to expand the discipline of cyclo-cross," said Evan Call, USCF Managing Director. "The riders are excited about the opportunity to compete in what we believe will be an outstanding environment to showcase the exciting sport of
cyclo-cross.Coming off its first two world championship medals ever, the cyclo-cross scene in the United States has gained popularity and both world championship medalists - Matt Kelly (gold, juniors) and Tim Johnson (espoir, bronze) -- figure to compete. Johnson is the defending national espoir cyclo-cross champ.
"With Clark's (Natwick) experience and other Northern California technical experience and creativity abilities for event organizing and marketing, we hope to improve the entertainment value of the event," said event organizer Rick Sutton.
"Cyclo-cross has a tremendous upside, and is spectator friendly, so we hope to cultivate this opportunity to further expand and expose the sport with this national championship."
The 1998 USCF Cyclo-Cross National Championships were held at Ft. Devens, Mass, and have been held in California five times previously; 1975: Berkeley; 1981: Pacific; 1984: Santa Cruz; 1986: Scotts Valley; 1993: Sonora.
The 2000 World Cyclo-Cross Championships are slated for Jan. 29-30 at St. Michielsgestel, The Netherlands.
In addition, the Saturn SuperCup Finals will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The complete Saturn SuperCup schedule will be announced at a later date.
