Hillier Than Thou Century Time Trial
Report & Final Results

Hosted by CENTRAL JERSEY BICYCLE CLUB
September 19, 1999
Washington, NJ

By Philip Apruzzese

Thanks to all those who entered our event this past September 19. We hope you enjoyed the location, course layout, event amenities and achieved your personal goals for the day. The added climbs and elevation total did little to slow the fastest finishers reflecting the higher level of fitness and preparation noted across the entire field of > 60 entries…of whom 43 finished within 8:10. We apologize to those in the front groups who outpaced (20+ MPH!!!) our volunteers to the checkpoints and are committed to resolve that problem in the future. Awards are being paid 20 deep to reflect the effect this may have had on your time. We also plan to offer a special rebate/credit for next year’s event to those entered this year; check our webpage posting @ www.truesport.com in early 2000 for more details. Make sure we have your email!!

Tentative date for 2000 will be September 24, ~1 week later hopefully avoiding conflicts with Univest Grand Prix, USMA mountain bike race (West Point) and local criterium.

HILLIER THAN THOU UPS & DOWNS FOR 1999

UP – The course in general and the 7 major hills in particular.
DOWN – Underestimating how fast the best riders would be to Checkpoint 1
UP New for ’99 back of T shirt artwork: 7 hill heights, course profile & total climb
DOWN – Too many leftover volunteer’s shirts…
UP – Top women’s time would have placed 6th overall ahead of more than 50 men
UP – We awarded her more $ than she would’ve gotten for 6th with the men!!!
DOWN – Second place woman’s flat tire interfered with her strategy for SPRINT finish !!!
DOWN – Insufficient team interest for a separate award
UP – The hot showers & bathroom facilities for the riders
DOWN – Little interest in the overnight accommodations set aside by YMCA Camp Bernie
UP – My personal satisfaction for our volunteer’s efforts, your accomplishments and a great day of cycling.
