El Nino took a break and a warm, bright day greeted cyclists for a quick time trial from Sonoita to Patagonia, south of Tucson. The 20K course which wound through grasslands and mesquite groves had a pronounced downhill grade which gave riders an opportunity for greater speed. The tandem team of Jon & Jo Roberts (Fairwheel) earned the fastest time at 20:29.
Robert Marez (CDS) finished at 21:19 followed by Sean Kneale (Pennyfarthing) at 21:57 and Tucsonan Dwight Nelson (Le Scomparse) at 22:13.
Jacqui Lockwood (Int. Crist. CC) was the fastest female (Cat 1/30+) at 24:28, followed by Irene Pang (CDS) at 25:13 and Lynn Kossman-Roach (CDS) at 25:21.
Canadian Maurice Johnson (EDM Vets), riding in the Masters 5/75+ cat, finished at 24:18. Maurice, who has been riding since 1936, won several medals at the Senior Olympics last May in Tucson. Both D.R. Deichman and Kate McCarthy of SDC Vets in the 60+ cat clocked times of 25:11 and 27:19, respectively.
