Nine riders braved the elements and competed in the first race of the Bush Lake Ice Criterium Series. While the course, basic four corner loop, did not provide much of a challenge, the frigid temperature and gusting winds more than made up the difference. The hearty souls stuck together during the opening laps of the race but the effects of the wind began to split up the group after four laps. With five laps to go a crowd prime of $5.00 really shook things up and Chad Swanson accelerated well off the front group to take the prime. Chad continued to push the pace and soloed the remaining laps to take victory. Jay Henderson powered in to take second place just ahead of a mad sprint to the line involving Shawn Callahan and Jim Ratelle with Shawn taking the third place spot. A note of interest, the number of spectators outnumbered the participants two to one.

The series continues this Saturday, January 17 and winds up Saturday, January 23. The series champion for each category will be awarded a pair of Nokian studded MTB tires after the race on the 23rd.

Redline sponsored rider Dale Knapp, fresh off his fantastic third place finish at the U.S. National Cyclocross Championships, took the victory at the second Bush Lake Ice Criterium. It's a tight race between Swanson and Callahan for the overall prize, a pair of Nokian studded winter tires valued at $126.00!

Hats off to Kristi Olson as the lone female race entry. As compensation for her performance, she need only show up for the final race of the series and finish in the top ten to take the Nokian tire overall prize.

The junior overall is still up for grabs as no juniors have showed up for the race as of yet.

January 24, 1998 Results (FINAL & OVERALL)

The Bush Lake Ice Criterium Series wound up with slop Saturday. Temperatures in their mid twenties made the day beautiful for racing but caused a bit of a mess on the course.

A new course was cut through the twelve inches of fresh snow that had accumulated on the lake during the week. But the high temperatures caused the layer of snow closest to the ice to melt resulting in several inches of water to collect on the east side of the course.

While the race promoters were concerned, the race participants took the obstacle in stride and the result was a great race for everyone.

The series first and only junior, Eric Stewart, came out, had a great time and was rewarded with a pair Nokian Studded winter MTB tires.

Kristi Olson, last weeks race winner, and Carmen Kissel dueled for the victory. Kissel was able to gain an advantage over Olson to take the first place spot. Olson won the overall series, and a pair of Nokain tires, with her second place finish.

A record field of 16 started the mens race and Chad Swanson and Shawn Callahan continued their dual for the overall race during the opening laps. It did not take long for the winding course and the wet sloppy conditions to cause a few crashes and mechanical problems. The race split up but Swanson and Callahan were never separated by much. Swanson was able to pull away during the later stage of the race, just as he did in the first event, with Callahan finishing in second.

Thanks to all who came out and participated in todays race and in the series. I hope you had as good a time as we did watching you!
