The unexcepted cold front cooled the weather but not the racing which heated up between Alkek's own Garth Blackburn and Louisiana's Jeffrey LaBauve in this past weekend's Regional Track Championships.Blackburn set the standard with the fastest 200 meter time. The Texan and Cajun met in the Keirin final and with home field advantage, Blackburn let it be known that he was in control of the track winning that event. LaBauve did not give way easily winning the first sprint in the Senior Men's Sprint Finals. After an all day session, Blackburn's endurance paid off as he took the second and third rides and his second title.
The Juniors served notice that they were ready to participate in the Senior ranks. Holding the lead in the Junior Alkek Velodrome Rider of the Year Standings, John Brant was the top rider in the Senior Men's pursuit event. As evening came upon the track and the sprinters were finishing up their rounds, the Point Racers began warming up for their 100 lap event. With five spots on the line to qualify for the national championships, the racing was fast. Nathan Fraizer was the lone rider to get a lap winning the endurance event.
