SEATTLE-AREA TEAM WINS TOP AWARD AT 1998 MASTERS NATIONAL TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

REDMOND, Wash. -- Seattle's Gregg's-Specialized team won the Best All-Around award for the eighth straight year with 276 points, topping the next closest competitor, Alto Velo, by 193 points Saturday at the Masters National Track Cycling Championships at the Marymoor Velodrome.

"We did great; well beyond our expectations," said sponsor and rider Stan Gregg. "A lot of our team came out to compete, they focused on their events and still had a great time."

Gregg's-Specialized biggest victory of the day came in the men's 135+ (combined age) Olympic Sprint, in which the three-man team not only beat defending national champion Team EDS by four-hundredths of a second, but recorded a faster Olympic Sprint than the 100-134 (combined age) group. The team, composed of Stan Gregg, Kirkland; Collin Cox, Redmond; and Ken Sinclair, Redmond; finished in a time of 1:22.25, averaging a speed of 52.52 kilometers per hour.

The Gregg's-Specialized crew added to their point total Saturday as the men's 45+ and women's 30+ teams won the 4,000 meter time trials. Thewomen's team, composed of Gina Kavesh, Bellevue; Alexandra Smith, Seattle; Annette Hanson, Kirkland; and Jan Lischer, Colorado Springs, Colo.; finished in 5:24.64 and at an average speed of 44.36 kilometers per hour.

The men's team, composed of Kenny Fuller, Anaheim, Calif.; Woody Cox, Bellevue; Michael Burdo, Kirkland; and Conrad Kreick, Renton; finished in 4:51.96 -- 15 seconds faster than the second-place team -- and averaged a speed of 49.32 kilometers per hour.

First, in the flying 1,000 meter time trial, Simons finished in 1:15.246, averaging a speed of 29.6 miles per hour and beating the old record of 1:17.003 set by Lawrence Galka of Colorado Springs in 1992. Simons went on to beat Galka's record in the flying 500 meter time trial also in a time of 35.824.

Four Seattle-area riders won Best All-Around Rider (BAR) awards for their age group, based on their placings in the 1,000/500m time trial, the 3,000/2,000m time trial, the Points Race and the Sprints. Seattle's Julie Gregg won for women 30-34; runner-up was Bellevue's Renee Duprel.

Cristine Smith won the award for women 40-44, Kirkland's Stan Gregg won for men 50-54, and Robert Kaye of Black Diamond won for men 60-64.
