Race Notes -
Category 1 & 2 Race:
This race started out pretty mellow on the 13 mile gradual 2% grade out of town. On the tricky windy descent the riders were all together and flying down the back side into the two building town known as Plain, WA. Here the riders would do 4 laps of the rolling 16 mile loop before heading back over Beaver Pass to the finish back in Leavenworth. Halfway through the first loop - Marty Weeks (Wedgewood) and a Canadian rider left the field to have a go on their own. This two man break put the pack 4 minutes in the hole after only one lap. With 2 1/2 laps to go the Saturn of Bellevue boys got on the front to try and bring back the break, The afternoon wind start to pick up making life a little tougher for the two man break - but they managed to take a 45 second lead into the bottom of the climb.
On the 800 foot in 3/4 mile climb the pack shattered and the two man break was caught 1/4 of the way up. Now the strong men came to the front pushing the pace - first it was Chris McCoy (Thomas Kemper) then Kenny Williams (Saturn of Bellevue) pushing it over the top. When they came over the top there were 10 riders left in contention - the descent back to town averaged 35 miles an hour - no one off the back was going to catch this 10 man group - they were flying!
With 2 miles to go Allan Prazsky (Atomic Racing) gave it a go - trying to escape the group - he was quickly brought back - then Mick Walsh (Thomas Kemper) counter attacked to no avail. At 200 meters Kenny Williams (Saturn of Bellevue) turned on the gas bring the pace up to 40 MPH. The rest of the group was scrambling to get on a wheel and to keep pace with Williams - in the end no one could come around Williams who won by a bike length. Williams who had rode the course the day before said later "I knew if I could get over the top with a few guys we would stay away - I knew I had to go early in sprint because it was going to be very fast - that's why I put on the 11 cog!"
LOST: One rear Helium Wheel - If you found this at the race I know a rider who wants it back!
IF this race happens next year - and that is a big IF - we will have better signs marking the course.
